ManCave Caffeine Shampoo Review: Can It Really Help Thinning Hair After 40?

As we get older, changes in our hair can become increasingly noticeable. Whether it’s a receding hairline, thinning around the temples or hair becoming more difficult to manage, finding the right shampoo can make a difference.

I originally bought ManCave Caffeine Shampoo because I was fed up with having an itchy, dry scalp and frizzy hair that was difficult to style.

I’ve always had two particularly awkward cowlicks: one on the crown of my head and another at the front. The one on my crown was especially frustrating because it would often make my hair separate, creating what looked like a bald spot. I was also noticing some thinning and recession around the front-right side of my hairline.

I’ve now been using ManCave Caffeine Shampoo for just over a year, so this review is based on long-term use rather than a few washes.

Has it made a difference? Yes, although there are a few drawbacks worth knowing about.

Key Ingredients

Shea Butter – Helps condition and soften the hair, improving manageability and reducing the feeling of dryness.
Glycerin – A humectant that attracts moisture, helping hair retain hydration and feel softer.

Aloe Vera – Commonly used for its moisturising and soothing properties, making it a useful addition to scalp and haircare formulas.
Caffeine – The headline ingredient. Caffeine has attracted interest for its potential effects on hair follicles. However, evidence that caffeine shampoos can significantly regrow hair or reverse a receding hairline remains limited.
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) – Helps condition the hair, improving softness and manageability while supporting a smoother appearance.
Although caffeine gets most of the attention, the combination of ingredients is also important when considering how the shampoo leaves hair feeling after washing.

Claims and Packaging

ManCave markets its Caffeine Shampoo as a deep-cleansing formula designed to support stronger, thicker-looking hair while keeping the scalp comfortable.

  • Scalp care: Designed to help maintain a comfortable scalp.
  • Deep cleansing: Removes dirt, oil and product buildup.
  • Regular use: Marketed as suitable for daily washing.

The shampoo is available in 200ml and 500ml sizes, with packaging described as using recycled materials.

ManCave Caffeine Shampoo Review: My Real Results

Does ManCave Caffeine Shampoo Make Hair Look Thicker?

This is where I’ve noticed the biggest difference.

My hair feels noticeably thicker after washing and has more body, which makes it considerably easier to style.

Previously, the cowlick on my crown would make my hair separate awkwardly, sometimes creating the appearance of a bald patch. With the extra fullness this shampoo gives my hair, I find that area much easier to manage.

The cowlick at the front is also less troublesome.

What surprised me most, however, was the change in the thinning area around the front-right side of my hairline. Over the past year, it has started to look fuller, and I’ve noticed some small baby hairs where I hadn’t previously seen them.

I’m not suggesting this is a miracle hair-growth treatment. I can’t prove that the shampoo is responsible for those hairs, and it certainly hasn’t completely reversed my receding hairline.

Nevertheless, the improvement in how my hair looks is noticeable to me.

Whether that’s down to the shampoo making my existing hair appear thicker, changes in hair growth or a combination of factors, I’m pleased with the results.

Has It Helped My Itchy, Dry Scalp?

Thankfully, yes.

An itchy, dry scalp was one of the main reasons I bought ManCave Caffeine Shampoo in the first place.

After more than a year of using it, my scalp is considerably better. The itching and dryness that used to bother me have improved significantly, making my scalp much more comfortable.

I can’t say which particular ingredient has made the difference, but the overall formula seems to suit my scalp when I use it correctly.

Of course, everyone’s scalp is different, and persistent itching or flaking can have causes that require specific treatment.

How Often Should You Use ManCave Caffeine Shampoo?

Although it’s marketed for daily use, I’ve found that every two to three days works best for me.

Using too much shampoo can leave my hair feeling very dry, so I’ve learned that a little goes a long way.

There’s also a noticeable difference in how my hair behaves immediately after washing.

Because it feels thicker, I find using a wide-tooth comb much easier while it’s still wet. Once it’s dry, I can use a normal comb or brush without any problems.

It’s a simple routine, but it helps me get the fuller-looking results I want without making my hair unnecessarily difficult to manage.

The Unexpected Problem at the Hairdressers!

One thing I certainly didn’t expect was for my hair to become difficult to cut!

After using ManCave Caffeine Shampoo, my hair can feel so thick that my hairdresser has actually commented on it being difficult to cut.

As a result, I now avoid using the shampoo for a couple of days before getting my hair cut.

It’s an unusual downside, especially when one of my original concerns was thinning hair.

However, it highlights just how much the shampoo changes the feel and manageability of my hair.

ManCave Caffeine Shampoo: His View vs Her View

One of the interesting things about trying skincare and haircare products as a pair is discovering how differently the same product can perform.

And this shampoo is a perfect example.

His View: Would I Buy It Again?

After more than a year of using ManCave Caffeine Shampoo, the fact that I keep repurchasing it probably says more than anything else.

It has its drawbacks, particularly if I use too much, but I’ve found a routine that works for me.

Considering the price of some specialist haircare products, I’m happy with the results I’ve had.

My verdict: A definite repurchase.

Her View: Not So Great for Long Hair

Her experience was completely different.

She has very long hair and decided to try ManCave Caffeine Shampoo to see whether she would get similar results.
Unfortunately, she didn’t like it.

Rather than leaving her hair feeling fuller and easier to manage, she found that it felt greasy and was difficult to rinse out properly.

The finish simply wasn’t what she wanted from a shampoo.
While it works well for my shorter hair, it didn’t suit her long hair at all.

Her verdict: Not a shampoo she’d choose to use again.

ManCave Caffeine Shampoo Review: Pros and Cons

  • Helps make awkward cowlicks easier to style.
  • My itchy, dry scalp has improved considerably.
  • I’ve noticed some baby hairs around my thinning hairline.
  • Makes my hair easier to manage and style.
  • A 500ml bottle lasts a reasonable amount of time with my usage.

Cons

  • Using too much can leave my hair feeling very dry.
  • Daily use doesn’t suit my hair.
  • Can make my hair difficult to cut immediately after use.
  • Can be expensive when it isn’t on offer.
  • Left her long hair feeling greasy and difficult to rinse out.
  • It’s not a proven treatment for reversing hair loss.

Summary: Is ManCave Caffeine Shampoo Worth It After 40?

After using ManCave Caffeine Shampoo for just over a year, my answer is yes — although it won’t suit everyone.

For me, it’s been worth the money, and I’ve continued repurchasing it. The results have been encouraging, particularly considering the problems I had before trying it.

However, her experience was very different, which shows that hair type and personal preference can make a big difference.

I wouldn’t recommend buying it expecting a miracle cure for hair loss. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for fuller-looking, more manageable hair, I think it’s worth considering.
