Daily & Weekly Ingrown Hair Routine

1. Cleanse Gently (Daily)

Use a mild, non‑stripping cleanser to remove sweat, oil, and bacteria without aggravating the skin. Harsh scrubs only create micro‑tears and make ingrowns worse. Try focusing on gentle cleansing rather than exfoliating at this stage.

2. Apply a Liquid BHA Exfoliant (3 Nights a Week)

This is the real game‑changer. A salicylic acid exfoliant dissolves oil and dead skin inside the pore — exactly where ingrowns form. It keeps the follicle clear so hairs can grow out instead of curling back in.

  • Use 2–3 nights per week
  • Apply after cleansing
  • No rinsing
  • Avoid physical scrubs entirely

You’ll still get the occasional ingrown, but far fewer and far less inflamed.

3. Add a Soothing Step (Daily)

Ingrown‑prone skin is often irritated skin. A calming layer helps reduce redness and prevent flare‑ups.

Look for ingredients like:

  • Allantoin
  • Aloe vera
  • Niacinamide

These help strengthen the barrier and reduce the angry, inflamed look around follicles.

4. Moisturise to Keep Skin Supple (Daily)

Dry, tight skin traps hairs more easily. A lightweight moisturiser keeps the surface flexible so hairs can break through.

Choose something non‑comedogenic and fragrance‑free. If you’re using BHA, moisturiser also helps buffer irritation.

5. Shave Smart (When Needed)

A few small tweaks make a big difference:

  • Use a sharp blade
  • Shave with the grain, not against
  • Use a hydrating shave gel
  • Avoid going over the same area repeatedly
  • Rinse with cool water afterwards

You can also explore shaving alternatives if shaving is a major trigger.

6. Spot‑Treat Stubborn Ingrowns (As Needed)

For the occasional deep or painful ingrown:

  • Dab on a little extra BHA
  • Add a warm compress for 5–10 minutes
  • Avoid picking — it increases scarring and inflammation

If it becomes infected or very painful, a topical antibacterial may help.

7. Be Consistent

Ingrown‑hair routines work best with steady gentle habits. You won’t eliminate them completely — but you can dramatically reduce how often they appear and how severe they get.
